Easy Flea Control For Cats

June 13, 2017 by

Do you want an easy form of flea control for your cat?  Come by the clinic and pick up Advantage Multi® for cats.  (If you buy 6, you get 3 FREE!)

Here’s how it works:

It’s a monthly topical.

Not only does it protect your cat from fleas, it also does the following:

  • Treats ear mites with one topical dose.  If used monthly, it helps to control subsequent infestations.
  • Treats AND controls hookworms and roundworms
  • Prevents heartworm disease
  • Can be used on ferrets

Fleas can be not only an annoying problem, but an expensive one. Fleas can lead to bad health problems.  For instance, fleas can transmit tapeworms or cause skin problems such as allergy flea dermatitis.

This product is recommended by our vets here at Day and Evening Pet Hospital because it offers a wide range of parasite protection.  That is part of what makes this product one of the most convenient to use because it’s given monthly and protects your pet against many things, not just fleas.  Also, this product kills fleas on contact.  This means they don’t have to bite your pet to die.

This product cannot be used on very sick cats.  Additionally, this product cannot be used on cats younger than 9 weeks and under 2 pounds.

Come in and get this great product for your cat!  Again, you buy 6 months and you get 3 for FREE!

Heartworm Protection

March 30, 2016 by

Heartworm disease is a deadly disease for your pet.  Heartworm disease is spread by mosquitos.  Briefly, here is how the cycle works:

  • A mosquito bites an infected animal and takes young heartworms as it feeds
  • Those heartworms grow in the mosquito
  • That mosquito bites another animal and those heartworms enter that animal
  • Once in the animal, those heartworms grow to adults
  • They live in the heart, lungs and blood vessels of the animal
  • Female heartworms begin to release young heartworms into the animal’s bloodstream

Heartworm disease is transmitted year-round.  It is a very serious and expensive treatment.  However, it can be a very deadly disease.

There is a way to protect your pet from Heartworms with just one injection.  It lasts 6 months.  This way, you don’t have to worry about giving your pet his monthly heartworm pill or being late for it, etc.

Giving your dog the ProHeart® injection is allowed for healthy dogs.  Please get your dog a physical exam to ensure he qualifies for this option.

Be certain that your dog will be protected all year-round with only 2 virtually painless injections.  It is extremely safe and effective and will give you less to worry about!

Love,
Day & Evening Pet Hospital

April is Heartworm Prevention Awareness Month

April 30, 2015 by

Heartworm disease is a very deadly disease.  The treatment is very tough on a pet.  However, the whole disease can be prevented easily.  April is Heartworm Prevention Awareness Month.  This blog will go over the basics of Heartworm Disease and what you can do to prevent this deadly disease for your pet.

Your pet contracts heartworms through the bite of mosquito!  There are plenty around here in Florida, so listen up!

When an infected mosquito bites your pet, the larvae it leaves behind enter through your pet’s bite wound and into his system.  These larvae take about 6 months to mature into heartworms and basically live in your pet.  Because mosquitos frequent Florida, your pet can get multiple bites.  He or she is susceptible to many chances of getting heartworm disease if not on a preventative.

Signs of heartworm disease vary.  They can be subtle or intense.  It’s very important to get your pet regularly tested for heartworms even if he or she is on a preventative.  However, signs can include coughing, loss of appetite, vomiting, weight loss, lack of energy.  Sometimes these signs don’t appear or aren’t easily noticed.

Ask one of our vets which heartworm preventative is right for your pet.  It’s so worth the cost of a preventative versus the alternative costs of treating the disease itself or worse, death.

We found a very informative video online.  It’s here.  Watch it and learn more about heartworm disease.

Heartworm FAQ

January 8, 2015 by

What is heartworm disease?

Heartworms are one of the most dangerous parasites for both dogs and cats. Heartworm infection takes place when a mosquito carrying microscopic-sized heartworm larvae bites your pet. The larvae enter through the bite wound where they develop in the tissues. The immature worms then enter a blood vessel and are carried to the arteries in the heart and lungs.

How do I know if my pet has heartworms?

The only for sure way to know if your pet has been infected with heartworms is through a blood test. Heartworm testing is done as a part of your dogs annual wellness exam, even if your pet is already on preventives.

Some pets will display clinical signs of the disease, which vary between species. Most pets do not display clinical signs until the diseased has critically progressed; therefore, it is important to start prevention as soon as 8 weeks of age.

How can I keep my pets safe from heartworms?

All heartworm medications are FDA drugs that require a prescription.  Annual heartworm testing is required for all dogs to refill your prescriptions. All heartworm tests require a blood sample.

It only takes one mosquito to infect your pet, and because mosquitoes can travel indoors, both indoor and outdoor pets are at risk and should receive monthly heartworm prevention year round.

Heartworm disease is harmful, and can be fatal, but is very preventable.

We recommend that all dogs be treated monthly with one of the following:

  • Heartgard
  • Trifexis
  • Interceptor (also available for cats)
  • Sentinel
  • Revolution (also available for cats)

Please talk to your receptionist, technician, or doctor to determine the prevention that is best for you and your pets!

Trifexis for Your Dog

April 30, 2014 by

There are a lot of flea/heartworm products out there.  We wanted to let you all know about Trifexis.

Trifexis kills fleas and prevents flea infestations.  It also prevents heartworm disease as well as treating different kinds of worms (roundworms, hookworms and whipworms).  Trifexis can kill fleas before they even lay eggs.  If there is already an infestation, the fleas will be killed in a couple of days.  This is a 3 in 1 medication that protects against fleas, heartworms and intestinal parasites.

You can start Trifexis on a puppy as young as 8 weeks and at least 5 pounds of weight.  It is a flavored tablet so it can be given to your dog as a treat.

The most common side effects in using this drug (as there are possible side effects for any drug used) are vomiting, slowness, lack of appetite and tiredness.

You must get approval from one of our vets to use this medication.  It is very important that you do this as your pup could be allergic to something in the medication.  Additionally, it should not be used if your dog already has been diagnosed with heartworms.

Now, if you are interested in this type of prevention, you can get $50 off a year’s supply at our office right now.  Please don’t hesitate to ask us or check it out.  It’s a great product and does work.

Here is a video regarding it from the Trifexis website (it’s in the top right corner after you click):  Click here

We want your dog to live a happy and healthy life.  He or she will need to be on some form of prevention of different parasites out there.  Please take note of this one.
