Fleas can come from anywhere. Your dog can get them from a park, a short walk down your neighborhood sidewalk, other dogs or even your own house. Of course cats can get them too. Fleas are everywhere and your pet can be a host very easily if they aren’t on a preventative.
Fleas can be found anywhere because an infested animal around will have fleas on him or her who lay eggs which can fall to the environment.
These baby eggs then hatch and so begins a whole new infestation.
“Fun” fact: A female flea can lay 40-50 eggs per day. With this datum alone you can see how quickly a few fleas on your pet can turn into hundreds!
As mentioned before, flea eggs can fall off your pet and into the environment. This also includes your house. Flea eggs hatch into carpet, rugs, your fabric furniture, etc. These baby fleas hatch into larvae which later mature and jump onto your pet which further spread the infestation.
You can keep your house flea-free by regularly vacuuming and washing your pet’s bed in hot water regularly as well as keeping your pet on a flea killer and preventative (a must).
Many pets can get flea allergies to bites. These allergies can make them continually scratch and scratch and scratch!
It’s important for you AND your pet to get onto the right preventative. See one of our vets or especially trained staff. We are more than happy to help you.
