Dogs and People-Food

August 15, 2013 by

We all know that if you asked any vet if you could feed your dog people food that they would say, “No.”

But do you know why?

Sometimes it is hard to resist those sad puppy eyes when your pet looks at you longingly for a share of the family meal.  If you cannot resist and must give him or her a small “treat,” remember the list below.  It may save his stomach, his life and your wallet.

Chicken Bones:  Do not feed your pet these.  Your dog is at risk of the bone splintering which would create harmful effects for your dog’s digestion.

Onions and Garlic:  Do not feed your pet anything that contains either of these products.  Any meat, vegetable, sauce, etc. which contains any form of onion or garlic falls in this category (even onion/garlic powder!).  These foods can create anemia for your pet.  Your  pet will become very sick if these are given in large quantities.

Grapes and Raisins:  These are actually toxic to your pet.  Even cookies or muffins containing raisins should not be given to your pet at all.  These foods can create kidney failure.

Dairy Products:  These need to be avoided.  We have seen some ice cream stands saying they would give your dog a “kiddie cone” when you buy your own.  It sounds fun for you and your dog, but it is actually quite the opposite.  Don’t be surprised if your pet has a case of diarrhea or digestive problems a little later.

Raw Meat:  Just like it is for humans, this is unhealthy for your dog.  Your pet could suffer from food poisoning.  Just don’t do it.

Chocolate:  Everyone knows about this one.  This is fatal for your pet.  The darker the chocolate, the more toxic it is for your pet.

Click here for a slide show that is very informative.  It gives even more information and more foods you should never feed your pet.  We like it because it also tells you why.

We hope your pet has a very long and happy life as part of your family!

My Pet Has Allergies?

August 5, 2013 by

Is your pet constantly scratching, losing hair, sneezing, coughing, or chewing at their skin?  These can all be signs of allergies. Environmental and food allergies not only affect us as humans, but they affect our pets as well. Here in Florida, allergies can be a year long problem. The constant itching and scratching can be enough to drive you and your pet crazy!

Your pet can have two different types of allergies (and some unlucky few have both at the same time).  Your pet can either have environmental allergies (things your pet inhales around him) or food allergies.

Leaving your pet untreated if he or she has any sort of allergy can create even greater problems for the future.  For instance, let’s say your pet is scratching and scratching and that part of his skin becomes raw.  A result of this can be an unnecessary bacterial infection.  Incessant scratching can also create hot spots and other infections.  These secondary problems/reactions are generally noticed first by their owners and then we see their pet.  We want to let you know that there are signs you can watch for so you don’t have to ever see these secondary problems.

Firstly, your pet should get a regular pet exam (recommended at least once year but twice a year is best).  This keeps the vet up-to-date with your pet and gives him a chance to see things before they become real problems.  Secondly, if you see incessant scratching, sneezing, rubbing their face or ears on the ground, or chewing and licking at their paws, don’t be afraid to call us or bring your pet in.  These are the first signs of a possible allergic reaction.

Here at the Day and Evening Pet Hospital, we have ways to combat your pets allergies:  medicated shampoos, oral medications, prescription diets, and allergy testing and injections.

Don’t let your pet scratch one more day! Give us a call to schedule an appointment to discuss allergy treatment for your pet!

Why Should I Neuter My Pet?

July 25, 2013 by

Did you get a new pet?  Picked up a stray female?  As a pet owner, there are many things you will be told to do with a new pet.  However, one important and healthy point is to neuter your male pet as soon as possible.  Neutering is a general term used to describe the castration of a male animal.  The surgical procedure, performed by a veterinarian, makes the male incapable of reproducing.  A list of common questions are listed below so you can understand the surgery’s benefits.

Why should I have my pet neutered?

Animal shelters, both public and private, are faced with an incredible burden: What to do with the overpopulation of dogs and cats that they cannot find homes for! Approximately 3.7 million animals are euthanized at shelters each year, only because there are not enough willing adopters. Having your pet spayed or neutered ensures that you will not be adding to this tremendous burden.

When can I have this procedure done?

Both procedures can safely be performed at as early as 4 months of age. The Day And Evening Pet Hospital is a strong proponent of juvenile or pediatric spay/neuter since it is both healthy for pets and effectively reduces pet overpopulation.  This is another reason why we provide this surgery as a low-cost service.  Click here for coupon.

What are some of the health and behavioral benefits?

Through neutering, you can help your dog or cat live a happier, healthier, longer life.

Neutering of male dogs and cats can prevent certain undesirable sexual behaviors, such as urine marking, humping, male aggression and the urge to roam. If you have more than one pet in your household, all the pets will generally get along better if they are neutered.

A long-term benefit of spaying and neutering is improved health for both cats and dogs.  Neutering males prevents testicular cancer and enlargement of the prostate gland, and greatly reduces their risk for perianal tumors.

Answers to Common Questions:

Drop off is between 9:00 and 10:00 am. Pick up is typically between 3:00 and 4:00 pm, but you have until 7:30 pm to pick up your pet.

Your pet will have internal sutures, and skin glue will be applied to the outside. This is so you do not have to come back for us to remove the sutures.

Your pet does need to be up to date on vaccines. Dogs need to have their DHPP, Bordetella, and Rabies vaccines. It is $33 plus their county license. Cats need to have their FVRCP, and rabies vaccines. It is $22 plus their county license.

We have optional take home medication. Antibiotics are $15 and Pain medications are $25. We always recommend both. We can also provide an e-collar to prevent your pet from licking the incision site for $15.

Hopefully you found this informative and learned some new information!  Come see us!

Why Should I Spay My Pet?

July 25, 2013 by

Did you get a new pet?  Picked up a stray female?  As a pet owner, there are many things you will be told to do with a new pet.  However, one important and healthy point is to spay your female pet as soon as possible.  Spaying is a general term used to describe the ovariohysterectomy of a female animal.  The surgical procedure, performed by a veterinarian, makes the female incapable of reproducing.  A list of common questions are listed below so you can understand the surgery’s benefits.

What are some of the health and behavioral benefits?

Spaying eliminates the constant crying and nervous pacing of a female cat in heat. Spaying a female dog also eliminates the messiness associated with the heat cycle.

Neutering of male dogs and cats can prevent certain undesirable sexual behaviors, such as urine marking, humping, male aggression and the urge to roam. If you have more than one pet in your household, all the pets will generally get along better if they are spayed/neutered.

There are several long-term benefits that go along with spays:  Spaying females prior to their first heat cycle nearly eliminates the risk of breast cancer and totally prevents uterine infections and uterine cancer.
