There are several reason why using a pill form of flea prevention may be better and more convenient for you and your dog. If you have found topical solutions messy and hard to put on, you may want to try a pill-form of prevention. Another reason you may want to switch is if your dogs swim or bathe very frequently. Additionally, if your dog has a skin condition that can’t take the topical solution, the pill form is for you.
A product we have at the office is in pill-form and is a flea preventative. It is called Comfortis and is given monthly.
The flea has a life cycle once on your dog. Different products kill fleas in particular stages of that “life cycle.”
The great thing about this pill is that it kills fleas BEFORE they lay eggs. In fact, after the pill in ingested it starts killing fleas in just 30 minutes.
Comfortis can be used for dogs 14 weeks and older while weighing at least 3.3 lbs. It can be used for cats 14 weeks and older while weighing at least 2 lbs.
For best results, please give the pill with food. The pill can be chewed or given like you give other tablet medications. Additionally, please ensure all pets in the household are on some form of flea preventative so as to prevent any other flea re-infestations.
If you are interested in a pill-form preventative, please speak with the vet to see if it is an OK solution for your pet. If it is, our vets will prescribe it to you.
Again, it is a monthly prescription. You can sign up online for monthly e-mail reminders for your dog’s or cat’s due date for the next monthly pill. It is pretty convenient and you don’t have to worry about when to give the next pill–you can just wait for the Email to come in. The website is: www.comfortis.com
If this interests you, please ask one of our vets about it!
