Is your pet constantly scratching, losing hair, sneezing, coughing, or chewing at their skin? These can all be signs of allergies. Environmental and food allergies not only affect us as humans, but they affect our pets as well. Here in Florida, allergies can be a year long problem. The constant itching and scratching can be enough to drive you and your pet crazy!
Your pet can have two different types of allergies (and some unlucky few have both at the same time). Your pet can either have environmental allergies (things your pet inhales around him) or food allergies.
Leaving your pet untreated if he or she has any sort of allergy can create even greater problems for the future. For instance, let’s say your pet is scratching and scratching and that part of his skin becomes raw. A result of this can be an unnecessary bacterial infection. Incessant scratching can also create hot spots and other infections. These secondary problems/reactions are generally noticed first by their owners and then we see their pet. We want to let you know that there are signs you can watch for so you don’t have to ever see these secondary problems.
Firstly, your pet should get a regular pet exam (recommended at least once year but twice a year is best). This keeps the vet up-to-date with your pet and gives him a chance to see things before they become real problems. Secondly, if you see incessant scratching, sneezing, rubbing their face or ears on the ground, or chewing and licking at their paws, don’t be afraid to call us or bring your pet in. These are the first signs of a possible allergic reaction.
Here at the Day and Evening Pet Hospital, we have ways to combat your pets allergies: medicated shampoos, oral medications, prescription diets, and allergy testing and injections.
Don’t let your pet scratch one more day! Give us a call to schedule an appointment to discuss allergy treatment for your pet!
